Asked Questions

Everything you need to know about traffic school in California — eligibility, deadlines, points, insurance, and how the online course works.

Topics

Eligibility
To be eligible you need: a valid California driver's license at the time of the violation, to have been driving a non-commercial vehicle, a minor traffic infraction (not a DUI, misdemeanor, or violation requiring mandatory court appearance), court permission to attend, and you must not have used traffic school in the past 18 months.
Not to mask points on their commercial driving record. CDL holders cannot use TVS to suppress points on their commercial record. They can attend if the violation occurred in their personal vehicle, but the point will still show on their commercial record.
Generally yes. Red light camera tickets typically qualify for traffic school. However you still need to request and receive permission from your court before enrolling — don't assume you qualify automatically.
Most minor speeding violations qualify. Violations of more than 100 mph generally do not. Check with your court — they make the final determination on eligibility regardless of the violation type.
No. You must have a valid California driver's license at the time of the violation to use California traffic school. Out-of-state license holders are not eligible for the TVS program.
The Course
Most people finish in a few hours. California law requires a minimum study time so you can't rush through in 20 minutes — but it's very manageable in one sitting. You can also split it across multiple days and pick up where you left off.
Yes. The course works on any device with internet — phone, tablet, laptop, or desktop. You can switch between devices mid-course and your progress is saved automatically.
Yes. There are quizzes throughout the course and a final exam. All questions are multiple choice based on the course material. If you don't pass on the first attempt you can generally retake it.
No problem. The course saves your progress automatically. Log back in from any device and continue right where you left off — nothing is lost.
Yes — the course is fully available in Spanish. See our En Español page for more information and to enroll in Spanish.
Deadlines
The deadline is set by your court and appears on your citation or permission letter. It's typically 60 to 90 days from when the court grants permission. We file your completion the same day you finish, but don't leave it until the last minute.
If you don't complete the course before your court deadline, the point may be recorded on your driving record and you could lose the opportunity to mask it. If you think you'll miss the deadline, contact your court to request an extension before it expires.
In most cases yes. You typically need to pay your bail (fine) and request traffic school permission from the court before enrolling. Some courts show eligibility on the citation itself; others require a call or visit. Check your specific court before paying for the course.
Points & Insurance
Yes — if you're eligible and complete the course, the DMV will suppress the violation point on your driving record. Your insurance company won't see the point at renewal. The ticket itself still appears on your record, but the point is masked.
The DMV can suspend your license if you accumulate: 4 points in 12 months, 6 points in 24 months, or 8 points in 36 months. More serious violations like DUI carry 2 points instead of 1.
California allows you to use traffic school to mask one point per 18-month period. If you've completed traffic school within the last 18 months, you're not eligible to use it again regardless of the new violation.
Payment
The course costs $49 flat. No hidden fees. The price includes electronic filing to the court — you don't pay anything extra for that.
We can't issue refunds if you register and later find out you're ineligible for traffic school. That's why it's critical to confirm your eligibility with your court before paying for the course.
After the Course
Your electronic completion record is processed and filed with the court the same day you finish the course. You don't need to do anything — we handle the filing automatically.
Once the court processes your completion report, the DMV suppresses the point. This can take a few weeks. If your insurance company pulls your record after the point has been suppressed, they won't see it.
Yes. You'll receive an electronic completion certificate. We also report directly to the court electronically, so you don't need to mail or deliver any paperwork.
